Event Information: Year of Service

Celebrating the altruism that bonds our country, our mission, and our community - #PassTheBaton

The Boston Marathon has been a team effort for 122 years. Leading up to the 2018 Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. will celebrate a Year of Service, honoring service to country, mission, and community.

Through the Year of Service, the B.A.A. will share stories of service through its various social media channels, and will encourage members of the running community to ‘Pass the Baton’ forward with acts of kindness to those who serve others. From military to law enforcement personnel; fire fighters to doctors, nurses, and EMTs; and our own thousands of Boston Marathon volunteers, the Year of Service will highlight and thank those who have served the country, the B.A.A.’s mission, and the greater community.

As a nod to the centennial anniversary of the 1918 Boston Marathon Military Relay, the hashtag #PassTheBaton will be used throughout the Year of Service campaign to highlight stories of service. Throughout the Year of Service, the B.A.A. will implore its audiences to share social posts recognizing those who serve, and encouraging others to #PassTheBaton forward through an act of kindness.

Stay tuned for more on the Year of Service as we approach race day, and be sure to #PassTheBaton.

A century ago, the 1918 Boston Marathon was held as a military relay race, unlike its traditional fashion. Ten-man teams representing various military branches ran from Ashland to Boston, passing a baton along the course. The relay served as a unifying moment for community and country. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of this relay, the B.A.A. has selected 16 people with ties to the five branches of the US Military and to the eight cities and towns of the Boston Marathon course to pass a baton during the 2018 Boston Marathon.
